EARLY CHILDHOOD DUAL LANGUAGE 
INTERACTIVE WORKSHOPS

Learn about an Interdisciplinary sequence of learning that begins with concrete experiences and actively involves learners in the process of biliteracy development through an inquiry approach. These professional development sessions can take place over two or three days, virtual or in-person. Discover practices that nurture children’s bilingual identities and augment their growth in all developmental

domains.

Reading Time

PART 1

This workshop introduces Phase 1 of the Interdisciplinary Biliteracy Sequence. Learn practical strategies to engage young children as they participate in concrete, direct experiences that strengthen and promote vocabulary and concept development through listening and speaking. Gain purposeful techniques that guide children's natural inquiry.

PART 2

Move into Phase 2 of the Interdisciplinary Biliteracy Sequence deliberately planned to integrate listening, speaking, writing, and reading. Develop strategies to support learners early writing skills based on hands-on experiences. Discover how experiential word walls and charts can extend language opportunities.

PART 3

Explore Phase 3 of the Interdisciplinary Biliteracy Sequence and integrate culturally relevant read-alouds to facilitate symbolic experiences for young children.  Acquire strategies for intentionally extending children’s knowledge into a culturally and linguistically responsive early childhood classroom environment that includes thematic learning centers.

Dr. Iliana Alanís, a native of South Texas, is a Professor of Early Childhood and Elementary Education in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching at the University of Texas-San Antonio. Prior to becoming an academic, she was a second-grade bilingual teacher in the Texas Rio Grande Valley. For over two decades, she has facilitated professional development for early childhood educators in dual language settings as a member of the Dual Language Training Institute.

Dr. Irasema Salinas-González has been a bilingual-early childhood education professional for 30  years as a teacher of young children in preschool and kindergarten, a teacher of college students, and a teacher of in-service teachers.  Her work focuses on developmentally and culturally appropriate practices for young dual language learners with a focus on play-based learning. 
She is currently an Associate Professor at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley where she teaches courses in early care and early childhood education.  She also coordinates the Early Care and Early Childhood Studies Program with Teacher Certification. She is currently serving as Chair for the Advisory Council for the Early Head Start CCP program in South Texas.
